A washing machine supply line failed upstairs in Gulfport

Water spread from the second-floor laundry room into the hallway, office and living room, then down through the floor into the ceiling below. We started drying that night.

The purple patch is wet carpet. The thermal camera shows how far the water traveled under the surface.

What we found

We arrived just before midnight. A failed supply line on the washing machine had saturated the carpet on the second floor:

  • Hallway: the whole floor and most of the lower walls
  • Office: about a quarter of the floor
  • Living room: about 84 of 420 sq ft of floor and 150 sq ft of wall

Water had also gone through the floor. On the first floor, acoustic ceiling tiles had collapsed and the drywall ceiling and flooring were wet.

What we did

We extracted the standing water from the carpet, removed the baseboards on the wet walls, and detached and lifted the carpet so air could move under the carpet and pad.

Downstairs we removed the collapsed ceiling tiles, cleaned up the standing water and wet towels, and set equipment to dry the flooring and framing. Dehumidifiers and air movers went in on both floors following the ANSI/IICRC S500 standard.
